Letter to the Community

After a difficult close to the year 2019, the British Commonwealth Society was faced with the need to cancel plans to launch a series of British Cinema Nights. This had been planned, together with PWCC and supported by ICBC, for the early Autumn. We aimed to broadcast British films not available in cinemas or on Netflix, in the hopes that the summer break would have somewhat settled the disruptions.

However, with the advent of the Corona Virus Pandemic, and with the measures put in place both in Chile and around the world, the BCS has had to postponed this initiative and to shift its focus back to its most important objective: the welfare of the British Community and the support in those in need.

In today’s world, where communication and social media keep us increasingly more in contact with each other, the BCS wishes to make use of these tools to reach out and help wherever possible. Not only is the health of society threatened, but the restrictive measures in place, such as quarantine and curfew, make life very difficult, especially for the elderly.

In its role of bringing together the different Community Organisations, BCS would like to use its broadcast facilities (Newsletter, Shoutouts) to directly and indirectly reach out to the wider Community in Santiago and to be on the lookout for any specific cases that require support.

If you know anybody, or of anybody, who is particularly affected by current circumstances, please let us know by writing to britishcomsoc@gmail.com We and our sister organisations are here to help and coordinate support where possible.

We have been contacted by HMA Jamie Bowden about the Embassy’s concern that vulnerable Community members are identified, and their situation addressed.

Together we can see this through and return as soon as possible to normal, when traditional and new community events will resume, and we can all enjoy them together.
