Jonathan Callund, Chairman of the ESU Chile gave a report of activities in 2018, highlighting:

ESU Chile had its best year yet: growing faster; raising awareness of the importance of oracy in pre-university children of both private and (increasingly) public institutions; and establishing a sound financial footing.

  • At year-end, there were 55 member schools and a growing network of public schools.

  • Regular activities have grown significantly in the year:

  • Public Speaking Competition, with 33 schools was held at Teatro Municipal with winner from La Maisonette

  • Poetry Recitation Contest, with 25 schools and 243 participants.

  • Debating Competition, with 13 schools was won by Lincoln International Academy.

  • Spelling Bee – offered exclusively to support municipal schools in Providencia, Las Condes and Santiago.

  • Essay Writing Competition, with 72 entries was generously supported, as always, by ICBC.

  • Teacher workshops, for 34 schools and 70 participants to develop debating and oracy techniques.

  • Together with the PSC winner, the Chairman was in London in May to celebrate the ESU’s centenary at St. James’ Palace with The Princess Royal, along with ESU representatives from over 50 countries.

  • HRH The Princess Royal visited Chile in November and presented the ESU Teacher Award at a special ceremony at Casa Lo Matta in Vitacura, attended by HM Ambassador Bowden, Alcalde Torrealba de Vitacura, past ESU Chile competition winners and teachers and children from ESU-member schools.

The ESU would like to record its thanks to the Association of British Schools, its members and the sponsors at our events this year
