British Ambassador to Chile

British Embassy Santiago

David Gardner, FCO, reported that 2018 was a very busy year of bilateral engagement with more high-ranking visitors than over the last four years combined:

· Visit of Liz Truss, Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

· Visit of the Lord Mayor of London.

· Visit of Mark Menzies, Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy.

· Visit of Boris Johnson, then Foreign Secretary.

· Visit of David Mundell, MP, Secretary of State for Scotland.

· Visit of Mark Lancaster, Minister of State for the Armed Forces (Twice).

· Visit of Ciaran Martin, Director General, National Cyber Security Centre for Cyber Seminar and bilateral talks.

· Chile Day London with involvement of Sir Alan Duncan, MP, Jesse Norman MP and Liz Truss MP.

· Visit of HRH The Princess Royal and Sir Tim Laurence for the Bicentenary of the foundation of the Chilean Navy.

· Visit of Jesse Norman MP, Minister of State for Transport

· Signature of UK - Chile Transitional Association Agreement (currently pending ratification).

This is all apart from the day-to-day work of the Embassy on political, trade and economic diplomacy, promoting UK values, policies and interests.

The Residence has hosted numerous events - The Queen’s Birthday Party, which last year included the Lord Mayor of the City of London and the British contingent to Expomin Trade Fair. The Royal British Legion held their Annual Garden Party there. The Residence was also venue for a many breakfasts, lunches, dinners and receptions for visiting officials, academics, business men and women and VIPs.

Our Chevening Scholarship programme sponsored three post-graduate students and hopes to send four this year. This is down from previous years, as following Chile’s accession to OECD, we can no longer use Official Development Assistance funds. In this regard, the Embassy is looking to find co-sponsors to help fund more scholarships and so give the opportunity for more potential future Chilean leaders.
