BCS Chairman's report for 2019:

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2019

2018 was a sad year for all of us at BCS, as well as for other organisations in the Community, due to the loss of Roger Barlow who died in October 2018. Roger, a dedicated member of the BCS Board, was also the Chairman of the Royal British Legion and an enthusiastic supporter of Community activities. He will be greatly missed, and we will be forever grateful for his dedicated support to BCS. In the name of the Society, I wish to express our deepest sympathies to all the Barlow family.

During 2018 the BCS continued to carry out the objectives with which it has been entrusted. I would like to thank our dedicated and hard-working Committee who have driven and managed the Society’s activities for some years now. Along with the Board, a special thanks goes to our Administrative Secretary, Pamela Yorston, who continues to work in the extension of the areas we cover.

In line with this scope of activities, the BCS continues its active participation in “Inversiones Principe de Gales” (PWCC) and “Inversiones Pedro de Valdivia” (Concepción Country Club), as well as the administration of cemetery plots at the Cementerio General which are entrusted to us. But, the BCS’ main purpose for existence is the management of funds to help Community members in need. This support is made possible thanks to the contributions of Society members and the Community in general. Once again, I would like to thank all those who help in this initiative, as these contributions, along with Society investment returns and the funds raised at events, are the three sources of income with which we meet the needs in the Community. The BCS takes this aspect of its mission very seriously and is always open to considering support to individuals where needed, and as circumstances arise.

Our fund raising activities have two major purposes: to raise funds for the Society´s ultimate purpose - helping those in need – and to achieve this goal through the organization of relevant events that bring the Community together.

In 2018 we continued our association, as in previous years, with the Teatro Nescafé de las Artes with the screening of a National Theatre Live production “Follies” in a closed event for the Community last August. I would like to thank the Teatro Nescafé de las Artes for making this possible, and to the Instituto Chileno Britanico de Cultura for sponsoring this event and many others like it over the last years.

As of 2019 the current format of the National Theatre Live productions is no longer available. The BCS is working together with the Teatro Nescafé to set up an alternative approach. At the same time we are reviewing other events that serve our two purposes (fund-raising and Community cultural interests). We will be informing of these during the year.

Looking forward, we will continue to cover all the areas entrusted to us. Significant progress has been made with future plans for Inversiones Pedro de Valdivia (Concepción) and with the cemetery plots we manage. The BCS continue to monitor help to those in need. In 2018 we assumed a further commitment and we are attentive to possible new cases. We are studying new formats to approach these. We will also continue to review and explore ways in which to achieve effective integration of the different community activities in order to best respond to evolving Community interests.

In closing, I would like to thank Gordon Yorston for his support with the Community Newsletter, as for the many years he has diligently produced this very appreciated communication tool. I would also like to thank the PWCC who facilitate rooms for out monthly meetings and other Community events.

BCS Annual Appeal letter:

We need YOUR help.

Having recently held our Annual General Meeting and reviewed our activities in 2018, we can proudly say we have covered all the relevant commitments which we customarily undertake. Of these, our highest priority is the help and provision for Community members in need, be this directly through grants, or helping to structure financial solutions. Also, we are always open to considering support in further cases where needed, and as circumstances arise.

This can only be achieved with the help and support of BCS members and the Community in general.

As we look out into 2019, the problem of helping those in need continues to be a critical part of our mission and one which we take very seriously.

Any support you can give us is crucial, and I encourage you to contribute, if you haven’t already done so, towards this great cause.

Please help us to help those in need!

Kind regards,

Michael Hardy

Chairman
